Hello and thank you for joining me in my very first blog post! As I write this, it is a pretty wild day out there – sleet, hailstones, snow and smatterings of sunshine – you name it, we’ve had it! I suppose we should be thankful that the “Beast from the East” hasn’t reared its head again this year but, really!? A little spring-like sunshine wouldn’t go amiss, am I right?
As if to prove that the sun does shine in Edinburgh in Spring, I have captioned this post with a photograph I took during my first springtime in the city (back in 2015!).
So, here goes… deep breath!
Some among you may already be familiar with Alcalba Design (hooray!), some may be new to the scene (hello!) and some may know me and have had no idea about this design venture (hi old friends!). It all started back in October 2018 when due to a mixture of factors I decided I needed to reassess what I wanted to get out of life. I’m sure I’m not the first person to have one of those “eureka!” moments and I certainly won’t be the last but it was important to me to be proactive about learning from it and taking a big leap of faith… et voila Alcalba Design was born!
Now, I wouldn’t want you to think that I developed the inclination or, indeed, ability to draw and design things overnight. Far from it! From as early as I can remember I have always loved being creative – drawing, painting, doodling, making things from whatever I could get my hands on (to varying degrees of success!). I enjoyed art classes at school but in the end made the decision to focus on more academic subjects that would set me up for a career in Law.
I am a lawyer by day and masquerade as a designer in my spare time (Clark Kent eat your heart out!). This is the first time I’ve ever done anything like this and, apart from my family and close friends, most people have never before seen any of my art or design work.
The first few months since I started Alcalba Design have been a steep learning curve – learning a whole host of new skills from designing and creating a website, setting up a Facebook page and an Instagram profile as well as actually designing products to sell has been something of an eye-opener!
And don’t get me started on marketing and raising the profile of my wee start-up!
However, slowly but surely you and a number of other people have been finding out about what Alcalba Design is and has to offer and, I have to say, have been incredibly supportive! So thank you very much for coming along for the ride! I hope you decide to settle down and take in the journey with me for a while!
So in the spirit of Spring and new beginnings, I’ll be popping up now and then on blog posts like this to keep you up-to-date with the latest news and happenings here at Alcalba Design HQ – stay tuned and thanks again for stopping by!
Aw ra best
